Camp Redtail
Severson Dells has teamed up with Boone County Conservation District to offer a wilderness canoe trip in the Sylvania Wilderness Area located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
July 30th – August 2nd Cost: $200
Camp Redtail is a 4-day outdoor adventure camping trip for ages 12 to 15 years. It introduces minimum impact camping and outdoor adventure skills to young people. No prior camping or canoeing experience is necessary but this is not car camping; i.e. amenities are primitive to non-existent.
This trip incorporates Leave No Trace™ principles, outdoor cooking, camping, and safety. Groups are kept to a limited number based on wilderness camping guidelines. All equipment is provided, except sleeping bags, clothing, and personal gear.
The goal of Camp Redtail is to model the principles of responsible outdoor recreation by:
• Identifying nearby outdoor recreation opportunities.
• Teaching outdoor life skills and building self-confidence.
• Stressing the importance of habitat preservation.
• Modeling safe outdoor recreation habits.
• Teaching Leave No Trace™ practices.

Every Redtail camper and his/her parent(s) must attend the orientation session. This session is held about two weeks before the trips, and covers safety issues, “What to Bring/What to Pack”, how to pitch your tent, rules and guidelines, the trip’s events, and will answer any questions parents or campers may have. This is a mandatory meeting. Failure to attend will result in being excluded from trips and forfeiture of deposit. There are no exceptions made for first time Redtail campers. No make-up dates will be scheduled.
