Born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured a young Elvis generations before, Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and John Prine among many other headliners, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet fully accessible music of our time.

Still, Thorn’s story has never been complete. If you follow it back through his songs, at some point near the beginning the mysteries gather like a mist, obscuring the picture and leaving unanswered the question of how he acquired his ability to find brilliance buried in shadows, darkness in daylight, poetry in the mundane, and truth in the brutal beauties of life.

Description: We need host/hostess volunteers! Host/hostess volunteers staff the nature center on weekends when regular staff is not here. Duties include greeting visitors, answering phones, taking messages and making bookstore sales.

Shifts are from 8-12 or 12-4:30 on Saturdays and 1-4:30 on Sundays. There is no minimum amount of time required, although many of our volunteers are comfortable helping out once a month or once every two months. We have a training scheduled for Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. and it lasts about an hour.

Kathy@seversondells.org. If you are interested in being a volunteer, but can’t make the training, we can schedule individual orientations.

Last year we played in the tall grass prairie, smelled skunk cabbage, built some awesome snow people, and held frogs, snakes and blue-spotted salamanders.

Dates for the 2011-2012 school year are October 15, November 19, December 17, January 28, February 25, March 24, April 21 and May 19.
The fee for all 8 sessions is $50 for members of “Friends of Severson Dells”; $70 for non-members. Space is limited.
