I am waiting for the Eastern bluebirds to return.

I want to see them perched in the bur oak trees along the winding road that leads to the Severson Dells Nature Center, staking out nesting boxes as they wait for warm weather to produce a crop of protein-rich bugs they can eat and feed their young.

Bluebirds are smile-makers, symbols of happiness, of spring, of hope and of survival. They’re like good news after months of the bad.
