Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and Green
Posted by Brian Leaf under Info
Hollywood stars have always been involved in causes. These quotes from movie stars about their green dreams are from Off-Grid, an alternative energy blog.
JULIA ROBERTS: “Motherhood is the big reason why I started thinking more critically about the environment and global warming. What’s the world going to be
like for all of our children?
”I recycle grocery bags and often bring my own canvas bags to haul things home in.
“I have a hybrid car, but I want something that runs on vegetable oil -I think it’s a small price to pay, to smell like ja French fry. I need to get the big one so I can fit my kids in.
“I’ve become a spokeswoman for Earth Biofuels, a biodiesel fuel company. Willie Nelson and Morgan Freeman are on the board.
“I’m also involved with SchoolBus America, trying to switch school buses to run on biodiesel. Our kids are inside those buses, where it’s so much more toxic and deadly. These buses can be changed to biodiesel and vegetable oil.
“I’ve been promoting gorilla-friendly mobile phones that don’t contain the mineral coltan, which is extracted from the gorillas’ natural habitat.”
CAMERON DIAZ: “I drive a hybrid car, a grey Prius. I have a compost pile and recycle everything I can, not just plastic and glass.
“I reuse wrapping paper. I use printer paper on both sides. I use natural biodegradable cleaning products in my home. I buy recycled scrap paper, toilet paper and paper towels. I use rechargeable batteries.”
GEORGE CLOONEY: “I can’t be saying what I’m saying about ecology and the environment and driving a Bronco. I have this small electric car,
the Tango. It’s 39-inches wide by 8.5feet long. It looks like a souped-up golf cart.
“It only seats two people but it does 130 on straightaways. It runs on a battery and is considered the most ecologically friendly vehicle on the market. I also have a Jaguar. But I had the engine rebuilt as a hybrid.”
BEN AFFLECK: “I don’t fly on private jets any more. They’re horrible for the environment. I go commercial.”
CHRISTINA AGUILERA: “Backstage, I request organic fruit - raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, plums and whole bananas -and one litre of full-fat vanilla soy milk. And no Styrofoam or plastic goods.”
DARYL HANNAH: “I use solar power, drive a biodiesel car that’s fuelled by cooking oil and I promote the concept of sustainability - integrating elements of the environment, the economy and social systems into a working framework for a good lifestyle.”
LEONARDO DICAPRIO: I pleaded with president George Bush to join the vast
majority of nations in constructing a concrete plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And my favourite car is my electric-powered Toyota Prius.
“I’m also a patron of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.”
RACHEL GRIFFITHS: “I buy all my produce from farmers’ markets and protect my eyes from harmful rays with two pairs of Person sunglasses - one for fashion and another for the car.”
BRAD PITT: “I’ve been working on green design. We cannot just consume ourselves into extinction. The ultimate goal is to get the designs built. That’s part of my project in hurricane- ravaged New Orleans.
“I helped sponsor an intelligent architecture competition that required contestants to create affordable, single and multi-family housing that is eco-friendly and community focused. New Orleanians are showing such determination to rebuild their city that I’ve decided to live there for a while and help them.”
DEBRA MESSING:“I’m into Linda Loudermilk’s clothes, which are made of organic cottons, bamboo and soy.”
GWYNETH PALTROW: “I’m partial to Stella McCartney’s animal-friendly deigns. Have you seen her leather-like doctor bag?
”WOODY HARRELSON: “My wife Laura and I founded Yoganics, an
organic-produce delivery business. I believe in eating all-organic fruits and vegetables.
“Everything I wear is 100 per cent hemp, including my shoes. They look like linen. I have a clothing company called Hempstead.
“If you look at the fact that over 50 per cent of all the pesticides are used on cotton, it makes sense to use material that doesn’t need pesticides.
“Hemp is a cheap source of materials used in paper and packing materials. It’s also an alternative for farmers to growing tobacco. I came to this as an environmentalist. Now, I see it as a crop issue.”
