I think it’s good for organizations to periodically revisit what they stand for. These values and beliefs were adopted by the nature center’s board of directors in 1998.

Beliefs and Values
:: We value the natural world and believe it is in the best interest of humanity to enjoy and preserve it.
:: We believe the human spirit is nurtured and sustained through contact with the natural world
:: We believe that environmental education is the primary tool for helping people learn about the delicate balance between people and nature. Effective education will cause an effective change in behavior necessary for people to act responsibly to preserve our air, land, water and natural resources
:: We believe that learning about the environment is a life-long process.
:: We believe all people, regardless of race, sex, disability or ethnic origin should have access to programs and classes

Vision
:: We will be the leader in environmental education for all ages. We will stretch beyond the boundaries of Severson Dells Forest Preserve to offer a wider variety of experiences and classes.
:: We will promote and sustain research that will lead to greater understanding of our natural environment.
:: We will encourage interested people and organizations to participate in preserving and enhancing our natural environment through volunteer opportunities, memberships and financial support
:: We will coordinate, compliment and promote the efforts of other organizations whose missions promote and support environmental issues. We will use collaborations, alliances and mergers to increase the services and financial base of Severson Dells Nature Center.
:: We will promote access to programs and classes for all people.
:: We will assure and demonstrate the quality of Severson Dells Nature Center programs and services.
