Posted by Brian Leaf under Events, Observing Nature
It is not too early to think about where you would like to be next spring. (We have just the spot for you!) Severson Dells is offering a 5-day trip to one of the premier birding places in North America, Whitefish Point, from April 30 – May 4, 2007.
Participation will be limited to nine people, so register early to reserve your spot!
Located at the northeastern tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.), Whitefish Point is a phenomenal concentration spot for migratory birds. Land and water features create a natural corridor, funneling thousands of
migratory bird to the Point.
Early May should give us the opportunity to observe the peak of both the raptor and waterbird migration. Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged hawks are the most common, but some other raptor species expected include Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Merlin and Northern Saw-whet Owl.
The waterbird migration features a large variety of loons, grebes, ducks, shorebirds, gulls, and terns, with many rarities found each season.
Birding stops also will be made at two other jewels of the eastern U.P. – Seney National Wildlife Refuge and Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Keith and Mary Blackmore, experienced birders from rural Forreston, will be the trip leaders.
The trip fee of $450.00 includes lodging (double occupancy), transportation, park fees, some food and leader services. A $50.00 deposit is required when you register. Call at 815-335-2915 for more information.
