The natural world offers so many great opportunities for children to explore with an adult along to help guide their curiosity. During this program Severson Dells staff will provide activities that give kids and their grandparents the chance to explore nature together. One does not need to be a nature whiz to do these activities. Call 1-815-335-2915 to register.

Adventure Quest

Grade level: 6th-9th grade (2007-2008 school year)
Monday, July 23 - Thursday, July 26
9:00 am - 3:00 pm (Monday & Tuesday)
8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Wednesday & Thursday)
(early drop-offs and late pick-ups can be arranged)
$125 per member of “Friends of Severson Dells”; $140 per non-member

It’s new! It’s fun! You won’t want to miss it! These four days are for youth going into 6th-9th grade who wish to experience some really great places and learn about rivers, wetlands, woodlands, and caves. Days one and two will be local as we meet at Oak Ridge Forest Preserve and Pecatonica River Forest Preserve respectively. Day three we will travel by van to Starved Rock State Park and explore the beautiful canyons and waterfalls. Day four we will travel by van to Maquoketa Cave State Park in Iowa to investigate the world of caves. Call 1-815-335-2915 to register and for more information.

Junior Bird Watcher Club

Club meets three times: 8:30 - 10:15 am each day
Tuesday, June 5: meet at Severson Dells Nature Center
Thursday, June 7: meet at the Barn at Pecatonica River Forest Preserve
Friday, June 15: meet at the Lion’s Club shelter house at Rock Cut State Park
Cost: Free to members of “Friends of Severson Dells”; $2 per child/per session for non-members

If you’re age 8-12 and enjoy watching and learning about birds, this is for you. Each day will feature a different area for young people to explore and look for birds. Severson Dells staff will gear each session to help kids observe and identify our summer resident birds. Parents may accompany us, but it is not required. Participants may attend any or all sessions. There will be a limit of ten kids for each session. You must call Severson Dells Nature Center to register 1-815-335-2915.

Camp Peek-Into-Creek

Grade level: 2nd-5th Grade (2007-2008 school year)
Tuesday-Thursday, June 12-14, 2007, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Dive into the ecology of stream life; whet your appetite and wet your feet in this wonderful wet world. Take part in the A’s, B’s and F’s (appreciation, biology and fun) of being in the great outdoors. We will explore the creeks located at Severson Dells Forest Preserve and Seward Bluffs Forest Preserve. (Campers will be expected to be dropped off and picked up at the appropriate scheduled locations.) The camp will be led by professional staff with a 5 to 1 student to teacher ratio. (Maximum number of campers is 15.) The camp will end with the legendary creek slosh through the dells in the beautiful Hall Creek of Severson Dells.
